Jahmyr Gibbs' monster extension is hilariously similar to Bijan Robinson's

Jahmyr Gibbs, aptly nicknamed "Sonic," finally got his coins on Thursday following a week-long hold-in at Detroit Lions training camp.

The deal sets him up for three years after his rookie contract is up in 2028, keeping him on board with the team for an additional three years while making him the highest-paid running back over that stretch of time. It's also a market resetting deal for Gibbs, who is now the highest-paid running back ever.

Of course, that snaps a very brief record help by Bijan Robinson, Gibbs' colleague and draft class co-star who just agreed to his own then record-breaking extension with the Atlanta Falcons. You let either Robinson or Gibbs tell it, though, and it's clear that the two running backs were pleased with the idea of one or the other breaking their teams' banks.

While we knew that their deals would likely be similar, we couldn't have guessed that they'd be this similar in nature:

The two stars absolutely deserved to be the duo to unseat Saquon Barkley as the highest-paid running back in the NFL. Since 2023, they've consistently been atop the league in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, yards per carry, and receiving yards as running backs. They're complete threats from anywhere on the field, and they needed to be paid as such.

Of course, with both earning such identical deals, the microscope will be fully over both of their next few seasons.

Detroit feels a lot more set for a Super Bowl run in the next few years than Atlanta, mostly thanks to the Falcons' potentially ongoing search for consistent quarterback play. However, they did manage to snag a decent starter in Tua Tagovailoa this offseason, so that issue might've been solved.

Both are primed for All-Pro seasons, with Gibbs specifically getting a new-look offensive line in front of him for 2026 to really cook with.

Last season, he struggled to get a lot of explosive plays under his belt because of how inconsistent the blocking was for him up front. With the addition of Cade Mays in the offseason and, ideally, major development from their guard room, he might be in for not only an All-Pro caliber year, but at least an Offensive Player of the Year nod or an MVP consideration.

Detroit's cap situation is a little sticky in their future, with Gibbs, Jack Campbell, and Aidan Hutchinson all locked down through 2030 on humongous deals. It's a necessary evil when you're drafting this well, and it's one that general manager Brad Holmes is clearly happy to have harvested.
