The Detroit Lions are hard at work in training camp, but the biggest storyline for the franchise is about who’s not on the field. Star running back Jahmyr Gibbs hasn’t taken the practice field yet in training camp, and with one year left on his contract, the expectation is that he won’t suit up until he has a new deal.
Gibbs has been present, though, and while he hasn’t had any official media availability, he did give a couple of responses to media members who asked him questions as he left the field on Monday. When asked when he’ll return to the field, the running back simply said, “only time will tell.”
The star rusher was then asked if he needs a new deal before returning to the field, and all he said was, “It’s not about that.” Gibbs didn’t add anymore to that statement, and when asked what he’s aiming towards, he expressed, “I don’t know,” before heading into the building.
Jahmyr Gibbs keeps everything a mystery when asked about contract situation
The Lions have been reportedly negotiating with Gibbs’ team to get a deal done, but since nothing is signed yet, it’s understandable that the running back isn’t participating in camp. However, for Gibbs to say his lack of participation isn’t about getting a new deal certainly raised eyebrows.
If it’s not about a contract, then what else could it be about? While the team has said Gibbs is dealing with a minor back injury, everyone assumes that’s just a cover up for his hold-in.
This was likely the running back just playing coy, and not wanting to give the media any real answers. By all accounts, Gibbs and the team are in active negotiations, and it’s only a matter of time before a deal is struck. Considering what the star weapon means to the offense, the Lions will most likely get something done before the start of the season, and Gibbs will become the league’s highest-paid running back.
While the running back missing time during the regular season shouldn’t be a concern, no one wants Gibbs to miss too much of training camp. It’s important that the running back gets his fitness level up and body prepared for the regular season. The last thing anyone wants is for Gibbs to go through a ramp-up process during the season, or for him to sustain an injury because he isn’t in the best shape.
Getting a deal done as soon as possible, and getting the running back on the field can help prevent that.
