The Detroit Lions made a no-brainer decision on Thursday, signing linebacker Jack Campbell to a four-year extension. Keeping the All-Pro defender around long term is a move that has fans excited, and the team also announced the extension in a way that made its fans happy.
With insiders getting their hands on most news to announce it early, Campbell and the Lions prevented that. Instead, they decided to make Detroit’s fans the insiders. The Lions announced Campbell’s new deal to season-ticket holders before publicly sharing the news, and the team selected one fan to break the story publicly.
Die-hard Lions fan Sweta Patel took to social media Thursday afternoon to reveal that Campbell signed the extension. In true insider fashion, Patel let it be known that this information was coming from the fan’s inside sources. The team shared Patel’s report, and a few minutes later, Detroit made the official announcement.

Lions worked with die-hard fan to announce Jack Campbell extension
This was a cool and simple way for Detroit to stay connected with its fans and show their appreciation for the people who passionately support the team. The Lions also created a special memory for Patel, who has an online presence as vocal Lions supporter.
Of course, none of it would be possible without Campbell signing off on the idea, but he loves the team’s fans, so it was likely a no-brainer — just like extending him was for Detroit.

The linebacker was a first-round pick for the team back in 2023, selected with the 18th pick, and he was a criticized selection. It wasn’t that Campbell was a bad prospect or anything, but the Lions were under a lot of scrutiny for the positions they were taking in the draft. Starting with running back Jahmyr Gibbs at 12, then Campbell, tight end Sam LaPorta at 34, and safety Brian Branch also in the second round, Detroit was getting hit over the head with critiques about positional value.
The Lions proved to be right, because these players helped them develop into perennial contenders. That includes Jack Campbell, who is coming off an All-Pro, Pro Bowl season. Fans are excited that he will be with the franchise for years to come, and even more excited they got to hear the good news first.
