The first round of updates in Pro Bowl voting is now out, and numerous Detroit Lions are near or at the top of the list for their respective positions.

Per NFL Network Tom Pelissero, leading the way for the Lions is running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who has amassed the fifth most votes of any player (24,951) since voting began on Thanksgiving. Among all RBs, Gibbs is still second to Indianapolis Colts' Jonathan Taylor (25,134), but leads all NFC running backs. Gibbs has had another electric season, poised to make his third Pro Bowl in three career seasons, giving the Lions little choice on who should receive the next big contract extension.

Two Lions are currently the leading vote-getters at their positions. The first is the obvious one, offensive tackle Penei Sewell, who leads all tackles with a 95.7 grade on Pro Football Focus and is considered the favorite for the inaugural Protector of the Year award. The other is the inside linebacker Jack Campbell.

Campbell is putting on an impressive breakout season, leading him to be graded 3rd among LBs overall on PFF. He's been a force on the Lions' defense, totalling 4.0 sacks, 117 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles. His play has surpassed "Pro Bowl caliber" and has entered First-Team All-Pro discussions, so it's been amazing for him to receive deserved credit despite the Lions' overall shaky defense this season.

Other Lions with a strong showing in their positions so far are SS Brian Branch (2nd), P Jack Fox (2nd), DE Aidan Hutchinson (3rd), FS Kerby Joseph (3rd), WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (4th), C Graham Glasgow (7th), TE Sam LaPorta (9th), and LS Hogan Hatten (10th).

Jared Goff in danger of missing the Pro Bowl cut

Scouring the top ten of every position, one notable name has been missing: quarterback Jared Goff. While Goff's performance against the Philadelphia Eagles on national television may have skewed his perception negatively, Goff is still among the league's better QBs this season. He's sixth in passing yards (3,025), second in touchdown passes (25), second in completion percentage (69.8%), and third in passer rating (110.2). All this while throwing just five interceptions deep into the season.

Of the top ten vote-getters at the QB position, six come from the NFC. Los Angeles Rams' Matthew Stafford leads the way, with the second-most votes of any QB. Following him are Dallas Cowboys' Dak Prescott, Chicago Bears' Caleb Williams, Green Bay Packers' Jordan Love, New York Giants' Jaxson Dart, and Seattle Seahawks' Sam Darnold. Notably, Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield also falls short of the top ten after being a popular MVP pick early in the season.

For Goff, making the playoffs is the only thing that matters, right now. Being selected to another Pro Bowl still isn't insignificant. That wall between four career Pro Bowls and five has historically been an extremely tough one to pass for QBs. Goff would be just the fourth QB taken #1 overall to reach five Pro Bowl selections, with the other three (John Elway, Troy Aikman, and Peyton Manning) all in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Goff would still have a ways to go for serious Hall of Fame consideration, but he could enter elite company at the QB position in NFL history, nonetheless.

There's still plenty of time to vote Lions into the Pro Bowl (Vote here). Voting for fans ends on December 15th, with rosters expected to be announced in January. Coaches and players will also vote, with all three voting segments being weighed equally. Even if Goff and other Lions aren't selected outright, they can still make it as a replacement if the Lions don't play in the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl would be preferable, of course, but Pro Bowl voting is still a way for fans to show their appreciation for players, like Campbell, who deserve it.
