Detroit Lions' rushing attack set remarkable record in first half on Sunday
These days, there may be no safer NFL bet to make (where legal to do so, of course) than an "anytime touchdown" bet on Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery. He scored the first Lions' touchdown on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and he scored another time after backfield mate Jahmyr Gibbs did so as well.
It's the ninth time over the last two seasons where Montgomery and Gibbs have scored a touchdown in the same game. And if one of them doesn't score in a given game, it's almost certain the other one will. At least it feels that way.....
Well, in terms of rushing touchdowns, one or both of the Lions' dynamic backfield duo scoring in a game has basically become like clockwork. According to the league's official communications department account on Twitter, the Lions have scored a rushing touchdown in 24 straight games-the longest streak in NFL history (including the playoffs).
Also notable-Detroit's streak of 21 straight regular season games with a rushing touchdown is tied for the third-longest in NFL history. The length of the record streak for the regular season was not stated in light of the Lions' 24-game streak with a rushing touchdown including the postseason.
When is the last time the Lions didn't score a rushing touchdown in a game?
The last time the the Lions didn't score a rushing touchdown in a game was Week 6 of last season on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Gibbs missed that game with a hamstring injury, and Montgomery left it very early with an injury to his ribs.
This season now, Gibbs and Montgomery have combined for 18 rushing touchdowns in 10 games (9.5 games if we're going to make it a more specific point). The tandem known as "Sonic and Knuckles" is making a strong case as the best running back duo in the league-and they're quickly making their case as the best running back duo in Lions' history, with less than two years as a pairing.
