Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell addressed the media on Day 6 of the club's organized team activities (OTAs). He answered several questions — candidly, as usual — including an injury update on star safety Kerby Joseph that came off as ominous.
Campbell genuinely doesn't know what to expect from one of his best and most important players as the franchise enters a pivotal campaign. On the surface, that sounds concerning and probably sounded alarms among Lions fans.
However, Campbell's uncertainty regarding which version of Joseph Detroit will get isn't necessarily a warning; it's more about not wanting to speak too soon. All parties involved are working diligently to manage and overcome the latter's nagging knee issue, but they don't want to overdo it ... yet.
"Really, I don't know," Campbell sincerely stated. "I honestly do not know. I know this: we've done everything we can do, and [Joseph's] done everything he can do to this point, and we are trying to be as smart as we can and not push this until we absolutely have to. "
Lions fans shouldn't jump to conclusions after Dan Campbell's Kerby Joseph admission
The Lions are currently in the "pajama party" stage of the offseason, as Campbell recently (and hilariously) coined. They aren't going to get any usable insight until the pads come on, and moving too quickly only exposes Joseph to unnecessary wear and tear.
"Because once we've [unleashed Joseph], then we'll know one way or another, and it's not worth it right now," Campbell said. "We're just slowly building, continuing the strength in there. He's getting treatment. He's done some of these different things at different places to try to help. So I feel good about that."
It almost feels like Campbell was politely telling reporters to stop beating a dead horse. If there was any new information, good or bad, we know he'd share. The 50-year-old isn't exactly one to beat around the bush, which is one of the many things the Detroit faithful love about him.

Meanwhile, though, Joseph is trying to work his way back to 100 percent. He appeared in just six games in 2025 due to what has been chalked up as attrition. The 2022 third-round pick suffered setbacks on the road to recovery, causing him to miss the Lions' final 11 contests.
Be that as it may, the show must go on with or without Joseph for a Lions squad with Super Bowl aspirations. Campbell expressed confidence in what he called a "competitive" defensive back group, highlighting Christian Izien, Avonte Maddox, Chuck Clark, Thomas Harper and Dan Jackson.
Joseph still played well when available last season. He recorded 18 tackles, four pass deflections and three interceptions.
