If you needed any more confirmation that the Detroit Lions are desperate to add some talent to their cornerback room, look no further than head coach Dan Campbell's admission during a Friday morning press conference that the team was "very in" on Joey Porter Jr.
"That's been ongoing and everything's gotta align right and the Cowboys did what they wanted to do but we were very much in," Campbell told reporters.
Asked if the team is still on the hunt for talent on that front, Campbell said that general manager Brad Holmes is continuing to look around the league for any opportunities to make a deal for cornerback talent.
"Just like any year, man, it's nonstop. Brad's constantly looking to upgrade this roster at every position. If we can find somebody that we feel like fits us and can help us, and the value's right, we will."
Lions likely to pivot after losing out on Joey Porter Jr.
As expected, it sounds like the Lions will be monitoring the trade market in coming weeks for any other opportunities to land a starting cornerback on their roster. Assuming Ennis Rakestraw Jr. doesn't have a sudden breakout season, or that D.J. Reed doesn't suddenly look about five years younger on the field, it sounds like a major point of emphasis for Holmes and the Lions.
Campbell pointed out that things didn't "align" with a deal for Porter, which is a very vague way of likely suggesting that money was not going to work between the team and Porter. Why trade for a disgruntled cornerback who is seeking an extension, to then not give him an extension and risk a sit-out situation with a brand new player? It just isn't something Holmes, or the Lions, would do.

As SideLion Report's Brad Berreman wrote recently, there are some other, more affordable options out there for the Lions - Riley Moss of the Denver Broncos or Kristian Fulton of the Kansas City Chiefs are names worth monitoring in coming weeks as their respective teams have a wealth of options at the position.
Detroit doesn't play Dallas this season, which is a shame, as it could've been a great watch to either see Porter flourish or flounder defending the Lions' receiving corp. He'll be worth a watch, regardless, as he's just another name the Lions were unable to net amid a major need for cornerback help.
