Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson has the perfect guy in mind to help break his single-season receiving record.
And no, it's not a current Lion. And, it's not a receiver.
It's Matthew Stafford, his former quarterback and the current star signal caller for the Los Angeles Rams. Johnson told Detroit Free Press's Dave Birkett that, if he had to pick one pairing to manage to break his single-season record - set alongside Stafford - it'd be Stafford and Puka Nacua.
"I'd have to go to that game if he did that, cause I like Puka. He's getting some crap out of his system that's just a young guy, just learning, but I think he's an awesome, dynamic receiver."
Johnson picks Stafford-Nacua pairing to break his Lions receiving record
Johnson, who recorded 1,964 receiving yards for the Lions in his 2012 season, has yet to see his record fall. It was an absolute phenomenon then, and it's clearly still one now, considering it's been 13 seasons and it still hasn't fallen. Nacua and Stafford do make a ton of sense as a tandem to get that done, though, especially with how Nacua continues to improve year after year.
If he can cut out the unnecessary extracurricular activities from his life that seem to be a distraction for both himself and his team, this becomes an even more realistic prediction.
It also feels like Johnson took a minor shot at the Minnesota Vikings when making his prediction for who would be able to take down his record next. In the same Birkett piece, Johnson mentions that he would've tabbed superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson as the next player to slay that record, but because of Minnesota bringing in J.J. McCarthy and letting Sam Darnold walk, he couldn't see that as a reality anymore.
"I thought he could have been one, but they messed up his quarterback situation when they brought in my man from Michigan [J.J. McCarthy] when they had [Sam] Darnold just win them 14 games...I hate seeing people get fired, but people get fired when stuff like that happens. "[Jefferson has] got the talent. What year is he in? Like six or seven? I mean, he needs to do it soon. He needs to do it soon, probably."
Minnesota now has Kyler Murray in tow, which is a marked improvement at quarterback compared to McCarthy, but still carries its risks - he's on the shorter side for a quarterback, making some question his ability to consistently pass downfield to someone like Jefferson if he can't see over defenses and his own offensive line.
Jefferson and Nacua definitely seem like safe bets from Johnson, though. It would be cool to see one of Amon-Ra St. Brown or Jameson Williams be in that conversation, but since the Lions just have a wealth of talent on offense, it's hard to imagine a world where Jared Goff would need to throw to just one of those guys for nearly 2,000 yards in a season.
