Entering the offseason, after falling short of the NFL playoffs with a 9-8 record, the Detroit Lions knew they had to make key changes to their offensive line which had struggled throughout the 2025 season.
Throughout the season, the group struggled compared to previous seasons, and the inconsistent running game and increased pressure on quarterback Jared Goff were evident. To help solve those issues, the Lions selected Clemson Tigers offensive tackle Blake Miller with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
With Lions training camp set to begin on Wednesday, Miller is already receiving recognition as a difference-maker for Detroit’s offensive line this season. According to ESPN, Miller's selection is ranked as the No. 42 move of the offseason.
Blake Miller enters rookie season with high expectations
The Lions' offensive line is expected to look a whole lot different this season following Detroit parting ways with Taylor Decker. Star offensive lineman Penei Sewell is expected to move to left tackle this season, a move the Lions hope will help their group return to its consistency.
During his collegiate career with Clemson, Miller started in 54 games and is expected to be a day-one starter when the Lions open the 2026 season against the New Orleans Saints at Ford Field on Sept. 13.

Miller's college career with the Clemson Tigers
Miller was known for being an efficient pass protector during his time with Clemson, and those are qualities that he hopes to bring with him to the Lions' offensive line as they prepare for the 2026 season.
Joining Miller on the Lions' offensive line will be another key addition, former Carolina Panthers center Cade Mays, and notable returns, offensive guard Christian Mahogany and right guard Tate Ratledge, who will be entering his first season with the Lions.
Miller will receive key reps throughout training camp, and it’ll be interesting to see his production in the Lions' three preseason games against the Cincinnati Bengals (Aug. 13), Washington Commanders (Aug. 22), and the Indianapolis Colts (Aug. 29).
With the Lions aiming to reclaim their crown as NFC North division champions, Miller's consistency in his rookie season will go a loing way in Detroit's goal of accomplishing that goal.
