The Detroit Lions made the defensive end position a major priority in the 2026 NFL draft, and were able to select one of the top players in the draft to fill the need in Derrick Moore.
Moore comes into Detroit in the position of being in high demand. The Lions need a pass rusher to slot in with Aidan Hutchinson, and need to find a way to generate some consistent pressure in the pocket. Fortunately, they have found a great fit to do just that.
Coming out of the draft, Moore has earned some serious praise for the Lions. Detroit avoided a bigger swing and traded up modestly to acquire him in the second-round, but it may have been a move that was worth it relative to what he can do. ESPN analyst Matt Bowen revealed Moore to be one of the best team fits in rounds two through four this season.
"The best speed-to-power rusher in the 2026 class, Moore had 10 sacks in 2025 at Michigan. He walked offensive tackles back into the pocket on tape, showcasing immense striking power and leg drive."
"This fits with the Lions, who needed a physical rusher opposite Aidan Hutchinson. Moore's rookie value could be on third downs as a designated rusher out of sub-sets. But with Hutchinson drawing protection slides and chips, Moore can also produce early in one-on-one situations."
While Moore's specific role has been questioned for the Lions as well as the depth on their roster at his position, there's simply no question that he is a quality fit for the franchise. Not only does he not have to travel far from Ann Arbor to join the team, but he fits at just the spot the Lions need to perhaps turn around their defensive fortunes once and for all.
Brad Holmes became impressed with Moore's fit during Senior Bowl
It's clear that Moore is a good fit for the Lions not only because of his strengths, but all the different things he can do on the field. In the pre-draft process, the Lions learned a lot about Moore that they liked, and that started with a strong performance in the Senior Bowl.
Holmes revealed that Moore jumped firmly on their radar during practices in Mobile, Alabama, and he showed his versatility with some of what he can do on the field against fantastic competition even without playing a snap in the game.

"Derrick (Moore), I don't think he played in the game, but his practices were really, really good. What he showed was not only that he was an improved pass rusher, not just outside on the edge, he can sub-rush too, which is very intriguing about him as well. I think that was a very underrated component of his game. I thought he did a nice job proving at the Senior Bowl versus top competition that he's a real pass rusher."
Right now, few people are expecting Moore to burst on the scene and set records as a rookie. Even in spite of that, he could be set to do some significant damage because of his specific fit within Detroit's defense. If it happens, it would simply be another tribute to Holmes and his scouts with the Lions.
