The wait is over. The Detroit Lions are about to play a football game. While it's still only preseason, a Thursday night clash with the Cincinnati Bengals will give football-starved Lions fans something to tune in for.
For players on Detroit's roster bubble, this game represents much more than a return to the field. Multiple players, rookies and veterans alike, are fighting for their spot on Dan Campbell's final 53-man roster. Training camp has established a pecking order, but the battle with the Bengals will be the truest test yet of who deserves to stick around.
These five players are at risk of losing their jobs if they don't perform at a high level on Thursday night.
5 Lions players with their jobs on the line in preseason opener
QB Luke Altmyer
Teddy Bridgewater's sudden retirement vaulted rookie undrafted free agent Luke Altmyer into a QB2 spot he was fighting to win. The Lions will surely scour the free agent and trade markets for other options. In the meantime, Altmyer has a chance to prove that Detroit already has the backup it needs.
Altmyer has played well so far in training camp, but this game will provide a tougher test. Jared Goff isn't expected to play, so the rookie will take most, if not all, of the snaps at quarterback.
LB Devin White
A former first-round draft pick, Devin White has had an up-and-down career. He produced plenty of tackles with the Las Vegas Raiders last season, but Klint Kubiak didn't show any interest in bringing him back for another year. He's currently competing for a backup spot, along with Damone Clark.
White is expected to make the final roster, but he'll need to show out on Thursday night to solidify his spot on the team.
CB Nick Whiteside
Nick Whiteside primarily held down a role on special teams last season. In a wide-open Lions cornerback room, the former undrafted free agent has a chance to earn a real role. His head coach has already taken notice of his impact in training camp.
Campbell said, "Whiteside has made plays everyday — special teams and on defense. Everyday. There’s not been a day yet, we’ve had four practices, where he has not made plays. So, this is about to get interesting. It’s going to be really interesting."
If he can parlay his camp performances into a preseason masterclass, Whiteside will become a roster lock.

S Thomas Harper
Whiteside isn't the only Lions defensive back jockeying for position. Safety Thomas Harper is dangerously close to losing his spot on the roster and may already be gone if Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph were healthy.
Harper racked up almost 500 defensive snaps for Detroit last season. He played well, but the signings of Schuck Clark and Christian Izien have pushed him to the roster bubble.
DT Levi Onwuzurike
Former second-round pick Levi Onwuzurike seemed to have finally reached his potential in 2024 before a knee injury robbed him of his 2025 season. Now, he has faded to the background of the roster.
If Mekhi Wingo and rookie Skyler Gill-Howard outperform Onwuzurike in the preseason, his spot will suddenly become much less secure.
