5 options for the Detroit Lions to add to their quarterback depth
5. Teddy Bridgewater
My lack of appreciation for Bridgewater’s talent and physical skill set is well-established, and it was reignited with the news the Lions made him a “strong contract offer”. He apparently thought, and maybe still thinks, he can find an opportunity to at least compete for a starting job. The league is telling him otherwise, at least until someone’s starter goes down with a major injury.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell is familar with Bridgewater from two yeas together (2018-2019) when he was on the New Orleans Saints coaching staff. In 2018 Bridgewater went 5-0 starting in place of Drew Brees, to fortify the idea he’s a “winning” quarterback and not purely a passenger when there’s good structure around him to elevate him. The Minnesota Vikings and the Saints had that structure around Bridgewater, and they won a lot of games with him. The Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers didn’t, and they didn’t.
Utimately, Bridgewater is a .500 quarterback (33-32 record as a starter) as he’s become a journeyman (just as some people may have forecasted for his career).
The Lions are certainly on the end of the spectrum similar to the Vikings and Saints. Bridgewater can be a caretaker under center, and keep the offense on-par if he had to step in. He’s on this list because he’s a theoretical fit and he’s still available.
But it’s fair to assume if he’s not all but assured to take Sudfeld’s job, Bridgewater won’t willing be coming to Detroit.
