According to a report from TMZ, former Lions defensive back Stanley Wilson passed away suddenly earlier this month at the age of 40.

Tragedy has hit the Detroit Lions player alumni group. According to TMZ, and later confirmed by Lions beat reporters, former Lions defensive back Stanley Wilson died suddenly earlier this month. He was just 40 years old.

According to TMZ, foul play is not suspected and autopsy results are pending toxicology.

Per the reports, Wilson collapsed on Feb. 1 while in the process of being transported to Metropolitan County Hospital in Los Angeles County. He had been in police custody since trying to break into a Hollywood Hills home in August. He was found bathing in an outdoor fountain after the alleged burglary/vandalism incident.

Wilson was subsequently declared incompetent to stand trial. Metropolitan County Hospital specializes in caring for those with mental health issues.

That latest incident was just the most recent time Wilson ran afoul of the law after his NFL career ended, including three arrests between 2016 and 2017. Twice he attempted breaking into homes. He was shot in the abdomen by the homeowner in one of those incidents, when he attempted to break in while completely nude. The third arrest came when he was accused of walking around a Portland neighborhood naked.

Wilson also tested positive for methamphetamine and was ordered to take part in a drug treatment program during that time.

Wilson, who’s father Stanley Sr. also played in the NFL, played his college football at Stanford. He was a third-round pick (No. 72 overall) by the Lions in 2005. He made nine starts and played in a total of 32 games over three seasons with the team.

Wilson tore his Achilles in the 2008 preseason and never played in the NFL again.

Our condolences go out to Wilson’s friends and loved ones.
