The Detroit Lions should have an eye on these six free agents from the teams who are in Super Bowl LVII.

Super Bowl LVII will take place in Glendale, Arizona Sunday night, as the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles put a bow on the 2022 NFL season.

The Detroit Lions are into offseason mode of course, with upcoming free agents to watch from each playoff round. In that vein, the Super Bowl will no different as their plan for free agency next month takes more solid form.

The Lions can be fairly focused on certain areas of the roster this offseason, which is a welcome change from the past two. They are also in good salary cap shape, with the ability to add a lot more room. Players they are set to lose in free agency, or they’d gladly let leave, will drive the list of free agent targets too.

Here are a half-dozen free agents the Lions should be interested in from the teams playing in Super Bowl LVII.

6. Chiefs QB Chad Henne

Being Patrick Mahomes’ backup, and working under Andy Reid/Eric Bieniemy, is a pretty good gig. And it’s one Henne may simply not want to give up as his career winds down. But he is a free agent.

Hopefully he won’t have to play in the Super Bowl, but Henne has proven capable when he’s had to play in recent years.

Lions general manager Brad Holmes very quickly stated the priority that would be placed on the No. 2 quarterback spot this offseason. Jared Goff stayed healthy this season, but Holmes saw (just like the rest of us) what it looked like when when he missed time in 2021. The Tim Boyle experience was awful. The 2023 season cannot be derailed by the pure failure to bring in a capable backup quarterback if Goff misses time.

5. Eagles QB Gardner Minshew

Along the same line of improving the backup situation in Detroit, we have Minshew. He seems to be on a Ryan Fitzpatrick-style path to a long career as a backup, playing for a lot teams along the way. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Minshew was mostly effective in two seasons as a starter for the Jaguars, and he’s been productive when called upon the last two seasons in Philadelphia. Plenty of teams looking for a better No. 2 quarterback will have interest in him, and the Lions fit that bill as well anyone.
