Tyler Huntley and Matthew Stafford have now made the same number of Pro Bowls

Somehow he was named an alternate, and now Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley and former Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford now have the same number of career Pro Bowl selections.

Tell me, even as the Pro Bowl gets devalued and players bow out in a favor of alternates, are these the numbers of a Pro Bowl quarterback?

That Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley was even listed as a Pro Bowl alternate, and thus an option to possibly go if it came to that, is a complete joke. But now…

I can’t say it better than Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk did in the last line of his quote-tweet of the Ravens’ announcement about Huntley.

If Huntley was going to make a trip to Las Vegas this weekend, it should be for personal recreation and not to participate in the Pro Bowl Games. Lions quarterback Jared Goff was also an alternate who is now going to the Pro Bowl events, but he had numbers befitting the honor as a top-10 passer in many categories this season.

Josh Allen is also not necessarily injured, he’s participating in a golf event this weekend. So the Ravens tweet stretched the truth there.

Given the numbers he often put up, and his annual availability to make the trip when he played for the Lions, it’s a little surprising Matthew Stafford has just one Pro Bowl selection in his career. And 2014 was not even one of his best seasons (4,257 yards, 22 touchdowns, 85.7 passer rating, 60.3 completion rate). The Lions went 11-5 that year though, which certainly helped. But even that is a far better single season Pro Bowl resume, even as an alternate as Stafford may have been in 2014, than Huntley’s four-start 2022 campaign.

The Pro Bowl had clearly become the worst All-Star game in a major sport, hence why the changes were made this year to eliminate the attempt to play a real game. Make it fun and watchable, in theory.

But some may see a case to do away with the Pro Bowl event completely, and this Tyler Huntley thing is now the No. 1 item on the list of reasons. The part about him now having as many career Pro Bowl honors as Stafford is only a tangent to that, as NFL fans (and more narrowly Lions fans) shake their heads at that realization too.
