In an effort to spark something, the Lions’ defensive coaches are trying some new things with rookie Aidan Hutchinson.

Most of the time, there’s not a lot to be taken from what a linebackers coach has to say. But this week, Lions linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard offered a interesting development regarding rookie defensive end Aidan Hutchinson.

Hutchinson leads the Lions with three sacks this season, all in Week 2 against the Washington Commanders. As a team Detroit has no sacks in its last two games, and head coach Dan Campbell has promised some changes defensively. With John Cominsky and Josh Paschal lined up to play Sunday against the Cowboys and bolster the defensive line, options to move other players around open up. Hutchinson has faced regular double-teams this season, wherever he lines up.

Hutchinson has mostly played strongside (as in strong side of the offensive formation) defensive end this season, but as Charles Harris will miss his second straight game on Sunday opportunities for Hutchinson to play on the other side are there.

Lions trying whatever they can to get more out of Aidan Hutchinson

Hutchinson worked out of a two-point stance a lot in college at Michigan, in more of a rush-outside linebacker role, to particular positive effect during his senior season in 2021. Campbell has downplayed the benefit of him playing in a two-point stance more. But it’s clear the Lions defensive coaches are open to trying anything, if it puts Hutchinson in a better position to make plays and naturally positively impact the defense as whole.

Some of Hutchinson’s improvement moving forward will come from pure experience and having seen stuff, and five games in he has certainly learned some things. Now it’s time to hone the rough edges, become more consistent and be put in better positions to negatively impact opposing offenses. Sunday against the Cowboys looks like the first step in those things coming together.
