The Detroit Lions defense could have had a softer landing coming out of the bye week, but Dak Prescott is in line to return to action under center for the Dallas Cowboys.

Coming off a bye that was sorely needed in Week 6, the Detroit Lions defense could certainly use a soft landing in Week 7. At least as soft a landing as a generally talented Dallas Cowboys team could provide.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has been sidelined by a thumb injury pn his throwing hand since Week 1. Backup Cooper Rush has held down the fort just fine, winning four of five starts. The bloom fell off that rose some in a Week 6 Sunday night loss to the Philadelphia Eagles though.

Prescott made some progress and he was on the field for pregame warmups, but it ultimately wasn’t too surprising he did not suit up even as the backup against the Eagles. After the game, via Pro Football Talk, he told reporters he fully intends to play against the Lions on Sunday.

"Yeah, for sure, that’s my plan,” Prescott said. “I’m preparing myself for the Lions, getting ready to play this week.”"

The Detroit Lions defense can hope for a rusty Dak Prescott

The Cowboys found a formula to win games that didn’t force Rush to carry things, as such a formula would be when your backup has to start games. A strong defense certainly helps. How much that offensive plan carries into Prescott’s return is unclear, but in his first game back he is likely to be a little rusty–at least out of the gate.

The Lions have been across the board awful defensively this season. Even if Aaron Glenn adjusts how he calls things to positive effect, there’s still a talent shortfall.

So the Cowboys probably don’t care how they have to best try to move the ball on Sunday, as long as they get it done. And the Lions are not equipped to stop much, so they’ll be hoping Prescott is a little off in his first game back and makes some mistakes they can (hopefully) capitalize on.
