I can’t get enough of these Detroit Lions. Not only do I expect them to cover the spread against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3, but I think they’ve got excellent value to notch an outright upset. Thanks to FanDuel Sportsbook, we’ve got a free $1,000 bet at our disposal to shoot for that huge payday.

3 Reasons the Lions will Upset the Vikings
Explosive Offense
Don’t look now, but the Lions legitimately have one of the NFL’s best offenses. They’ve scored at least 30 points in three consecutive games, and are averaging 26.36 points per game since Dan Campbell started calling plays in November last year.
Through the first 2 weeks of the @NFL season, the @Lions rank:
— Detroit Lions PR (@LionsPR) September 20, 2022
- 1st in rushing average (7.2)
- Tied for 1st in TDs scored (9)
- Tied for 1st in 20+ yard plays (11)
- Tied for 2nd in points scored (71)
- 3rd in rushing yards (372)
- 4th in total yards of offense (811)#OnePride pic.twitter.com/I547do15l4
Amon-Ra St. Brown and D’Andre Swift give Jared Goff two of the league’s best playmakers, while an elite offensive line gives Goff a big margin of error. Minnesota’s defense just got carved up by the Eagles, and I expect the Lions to find similar success.
Betting Trends
Detroit is perhaps the best NFL team to bet on. It’s covered the spread in nine of its last 11 games and in eight of its last 10 as an underdog. As a road underdog? The Lions are 5-2 against the spread (ATS) in their last seven.
Minnesota, meanwhile, is just 4-5 ATS in its last nine contests and 4-9 ATS in its last 13 as a home favorite. It’s easy to forget, but these Lions actually beat the Vikings as seven-point underdogs last year too.
Defensive Schematic Advantages
The Lions shut the Commanders out in the 1st half in Week 2 and limited Antonio Gibson to just 28 rushing yards on 14 carries. This young defense made a big step forward in that game and matches up well with the Vikings.

Detroit blitzes a lot while employing man coverage, and Kirk Cousins struggles against that kind of scheme. He looked completely lost against a Philadelphia defense that the Lions dropped 35 points on, and Detroit should emulate the Eagles’ game plan with success.
