Not that they’ll necessarily run out and sign someone urgently, but these three free agents could immediately help the Detroit Lions.
The Detroit Lions are riding high after a Week 2 win over the Washington Commanders. But a 22-0 halftime lead faded in the second half, with some plays made late to secure the 36-27 victory.
The Lions are likely a year away from being a true threat to win the NFC North, and thus being a real playoff contender. But that doesn’t mean roster holes shouldn’t be filled where it could be possible this season, via free agency, other teams waiving players they currently have or even trades.
Without further buildup, here are three free agents who could help the Detroit Lions right away.

3. OG Quinton Spain
The Lions have gotten good play from their offensive line thus far this season, despite injuries leaving all three interior starters out in Week 2. Logan Stenberg has stepped up at right guard with Halapoulivaati Vaitai (back) on IR, and Dan Skipper really stepped up against Washington with left guard Jonah Jackson (finger) out.
Spain has mostly been a left guard in his career, including 16 games with a solid PFF grade (71.5) last season. But he did play right guard for nine games (eight starts) for the Buffalo Bills in 2020, and that’s where the Lions have a potential long-term void this season. Vaitai has undergone back surgery, with a return date to be determined and the possibility he’ll miss the season.
Even at this point, Spain may be waiting for a clear-cut starting job that will last for whatever is left of this season once he signs. The Lions can’t necessarily offer him that, but his experience alone make him someone who should be on their radar for some experienced guard depth.
