As the Detroit Lions look at potential backup quarterback options, could an interesting one fall right into their lap?

Say what you want about Jared Goff as the Detroit Lions starting quarterback this year, good or bad. But there’s no denying the backup quarterback situation is not good or interesting, and no effort was made to not simply retain Tim Boyle and David Blough.

A list of backup quarterback options the Lions could be keeping an eye on is not necessarily inspiring. But it also doesn’t seem like a trade for someone more recognizable is at all on the radar, lest general manager Brad Holmes even give up the kind of draft pick that would be no guarantee to stick.

But as other teams have their own backup quarterback competitions, some interesting signal callers may become available whether they should or not.

Could an interesting backup quarterback option fall right into the Detroit Lions’ lap?

According to Connor Hughes of SNY, the New York Jets may try to sneak quarterback Mike White onto their practice squad to save a spot on the 53-man roster for another position. White is currently competing with Joe Flacco for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind Zach Wilson, but Flacco may be making that competition moot with a strong camp thus far.

White made three starts and played in four games for the Jets last year. He had the expected ups (405 yards in his first start) and downs (five touchdowns, eight interceptions overall) in his first regular season NFL action. But he seems to have something to offer, and he’d be an interesting upgrade to the depth chart for a lot of teams. The odds the Jets can get him back on their practice squad without another team poaching him seem slim.

Patience might wind up a virtue for the Lions if they end up less than enthused about going into the season with Boyle and Blough behind Goff. White, or someone like him with at least some intrigue attached, may fall right into their laps as an option somewhere around final cuts.
