The New Jersey Generals quarterback Luis Perez has played largely error-free football all season, and he’ll need to keep it up in Saturday’s USFL semifinal against Philadelphia.
Luis Perez spent a few days in Detroit Lions training camp in 2019. Before that he spent some time in the Alliance of American Football (AAF), and in 2020 he was in the XFL. Completing his run of spring football leagues, he was signed by the New Jersey Generals in the rebooted USFL this year.
Perez has been splitting time with De’Andre Johnson in the Generals’ very effective two-quarterback system. Perez started six games to Johnson’s four during the regular season.
Together the pair of quarterbacks combined for a 9-1 record and helped New Jersey win the USFL’s North Division.
Perez is the USFL’s most accurate passer with a 71.7 percent completion rate, along with a 9:1 touchdown to interception ratio and a 105.6 passer rating. His one interception is the lowest among all USFL quarterbacks who started more than five games.
Former Lions quarterback Luis Perez leads New Jersey to USFL semifinal
When Perez takes the field Saturday at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio, he will be facing one of hottest teams in the USFL in the Philadelphia Stars.
But the Generals beat the Stars twice during the regular season, in Week 3 and Week 10. New Jersey has the No. 1 rushing offense in the USFL (160.6 yards per game), and the second-best passing offense in the league (188.8 yards per game).
Look for New Jersey’s two-quarterback system to flourish against the Stars’ defense. The Generals’ group of skill position talent, led by Darius Victor and KaVontae Turpin, stands to be too much for Philadelphia to handle. Perez, for his part, just has to do what he’s already been doing– throw accurately to the right spots and avoid mistakes.
The Generals and Stars will the be first 2022 USFL semifinal game on Saturday, June 25, scheduled for a 3 p.m. ET kickoff and broadcast on FOX.
