Trey Flowers is still available three months after the Detroit Lions cut him, but could his potential revenge game wind up coming very early?

The Detroit Lions made the obvious decision to cut defensive end Trey Flowers in mid-March. Here getting toward mid-June, he is still available. An injury-hampered last two seasons with the Lions is the No. 1 reason.

Upon his being released by the Lions, it felt inevitable Flowers would land back with the New England Patriots. Another of the Lions’ 2022 opponents, the Carolina Panthers, seemed like a team who could have interest in him more recently.

But another of the teams Detroit will play this season has surfaced as a possible (and somewhat unexpected?) landing spot for Flowers. So he may get a proverbial “revenge game”, one way or another.

NFL Rumors: Could Trey Flowers land in the NFC East?

The Lions and the rest of the NFC North will play each team from the NFC East in 2022. The Lions will play the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1, in a team-wide “revenge game” after the Eagles undressed the Lions 44-6 last Halloween.

Geoffrey Knox over at Inside The Iggles has listed three available free agents who could make a run at a roster spot for the Eagles. In the middle of the list, there’s Flowers. Here’s a little of what Knox wrote.

"Sure, they’re loaded along the defensive side of the ball now, but if you can get a guy like this and do so inexpensively, why not, at minimum, see what he has.? In short, this move makes a lot more sense than signing Ryan Kerrigan and many of you liked that deal at the time.Flowers is one of the guys where, if he doesn’t fit your scheme, you may want to adjust your scheme slightly if he’s healthy. The question is can he beat some of the guys out that the Eagles have now?"

Flowers would be an interesting addition for many teams, the Eagles included. As time goes by between now and the start of training camps, he may have to take whatever opportunity comes his way if he wants to play in 2022. If that means not being promised a 53-man roster spot right away, then that’s what it’ll be.
