Former Lions running back Bo Scarbrough landed in the USFL earlier this month, and in his second game he earned a player of the week honor.

Upon landing with the Detroit Lions, Bo Scarbrough made an immmediate impact. He was signed to the Lions’ practice squad in early November of 2019, then started a week later against the Dallas Cowboys.

The Alabama product started five of the six games he played for the Lions down the stretch of that 2019 campaign, highlighted by the first four games when he had 301 yards on 72 carries with games of 65, 83 and 98 yards as Detroit’s lead back.

But the Lions remade their running back depth chart in 2020, drafting D’Andre Swift and eventually signing Adrian Peterson, so Scarbrough’s tenure in Detroit was over. Subsequent NFL stints with the Seattle Seahawks (one game played in 2020) and Las Vegas Raiders (waived in 2021) did not last long.

Scarbrough signed with the Birmingham Stallions in the USFL on May 9. He was eased into action in his first game, with seven carries for 25 yards in Week 5 against the Philadelphia Stars. Week 6 would become a moment for him to shine.

Birmingham ran for 175 yards in a 33-17 win over the Michigan Panthers in Week 6. Scarbrough led the way with 16 carries for 104 yards, highlighted by a 28-yard touchdown run. He also had two catches for 15 yards, with a long of 12 yards.

For his effort, Scarbrough was named USFL Offensive Player of the Week for Week 6.

Scarbrough stepped into a big role for the now 6-0 Stallions last week, and based on the results he had that role is not going away. Time will tell if he can get another chance in the NFL, but without the USFL he wouldn’t have nearly as good a chance to get himself out there this year.

In Week 7, Scarbrough and the Stallions will take on the 1-5 Pittsburgh Maulers. Kickoff is scheduled for Sunday, May 29 at 2 p.m. ET, and the game will air on FOX.
