Detroit Lions 3-Round Mock Draft: After the first wave of free agency
The Lions re-signed Tracy Walker, as expected. But they missed out on a potential higher end free agent target (Marcus Williams) and at least one other free agent safety who made some sense (Anthony Harris).
O’Neal looks the part (6-foot, 204 pounds), and there are no questions about his effort level or willingness to play run support. There are questions about his ability in man coverage and to be a proverbial “centerfielder” in single-high at the next level, but Detroit’s split-safety alignment and O’Neal’s development as a zone defender (h/t to Lance Zierlein) look like a solid match.
The Lions’ linebacking corps needs a talent injection, and barring a second-wave run at a free agent (notable or otherwise) that will still be a need heading into the draft.
Over his three seasons at Cincinnati, after transferring from UConn, Beavers totaled 20 tackles for loss with 6.5 sacks over the last two campaigns. In 2021, he posted 98 total tackles with 11 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
After getting dominated by the run game at times last season, the Lions could use what scouts like to call a “thumper” at inside linebacker. Beavers (6-foot-4, 237 pounds) fits that bill, with the ability to be a factor as a blitzer.
