D’Andre Swift will miss a second straight game on Sunday, but the idea he could land on IR has now ramped up a bit.
As the Detroit Lions come off a week dealing with a flu outbreak, the resulting lengthy injury report and a run of players going on the COVID-19 list, running back D’Andre Swift (right shoulder) will miss a second straight game Sunday against the Denver Broncos.
Swift was always likely to miss multiple games with a sprained AC joint, so it’s not revelation he’ll miss at least two games. But as part of a longer story about the Lions’ roster crunch for Sunday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter had a specific report on Detroit’s best offensive player.
"The Lions already were facing availability questions at running back. D’Andre Swift, who has been battling a shoulder injury suffered on Thanksgiving, is a candidate to be placed on injured reserve, according to a league source."
The Lions may be better off just placing D’Andre Swift on IR
Off the high of their first win of the season in Week 13, this week has been a buzzkill for the Lions. This is still a 1-10-1 team, with a keen eye on the future. That doesn’t mean they’ll lay down for anyone in their remaining five games, even as the Houston Texans ramp up their effort to take the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft. But it does mean protecting players from themselves where applicable.
Swift surely wants to play as soon as he is deemed anywhere near healthy enough. A generally lagging Lions’ offense lacks a serious something when he’s not on the field. But if he’s going to miss Week 15, and that’s looking likely, it would mark the minimum three games he would’ve had to miss if he’d been put on IR right away.
If Swift is not put on IR before kickoff Sunday afternoon, the timetable would now stretch to his earliest availability being Week 18. It’s safe to say he would not be activated for that game, so what was once a coin-flip chance he’d be put on IR now looks like a real possibility as the Lions face some roster maneuvering.
