The Detroit Lions will try to get into the win column by beating the Steelers on Sunday, but when’s the last time they won in Pittsburgh?

The 0-8 Detroit Lions will again try to get into the win column this season on Sunday, on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers. As is typical for cross-conference matchups like this, the two teams last played in 2017–a 20-15 win for Pittsburgh in Detroit.

The Steelers have won five in a row over the Lions, which isn’t surprising to know. Detroit’s last win in the series was the infamous Thanksgiving Day game in 1998, where the call of the overtime coin toss was botched by the referee. Pittsburgh leads the all-time series (again, not too surprising) which dates back to November of 1934 for two of the league’s oldest franchises, 17-14-1.

Just two of the Lions’ 14 wins in the series against the Steelers have come in the Super Bowl era. The first was a 45-3 win in 1983, and the second was that 1998 Thanksgiving game. That’s a testament to the direction the franchises have taken.

When is the last time the Lions won in Pittsburgh?

That 1983 blowout win over the Steelers for the Lions was at home, and Thanksgiving Day is of course in Detroit every year.

In the midst of a stretch where they beat the Steelers five times in a row and won six of seven in the series (with a tie in the mix), which feels incomprehensible based on where the two franchises have been for about five decades, the Lions won 31-28 on Nov. 13, 1955.

That’s also the last time they won in Pittsburgh.

The Lions last championship came in 1957, and they’ve not been anywhere close to winning another for the most part since. Meanwhile the Steelers have had three head coaches since 1969, while winning six Super Bowls with eight total Super Bowl appearances.
