Will interceptions be an issue for Jared Goff this season?
The Detroit Lions’ quarterback Jared Goff has the third-best odds at +800 to throw the most interceptions in this upcoming season according to WynnBET’s sportsbook. Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold and The Washington Football Team’s quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick are both ahead of Goff with the odds set at +750.
Last season, Goff was near the top of the most interceptions thrown list coming in tied for third with Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins and Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson who all threw 13 interceptions. So, what makes this season any different than last season for Goff?
He does not have as many star-studded offensive weapons that he was once accustomed to in Los Angeles, but the Lions’ offense still has some playmakers. D’Andre Swift in the backfield is versatile and can be a major threat in the receiving game. He has a trusted top tight end in the league in T.J Hockenson (something he did not really have in Los Angeles.)
Let’s not forget he will have veteran wideouts like Tyrell Williams and Breshad Perriman along with a handful of younger receivers who are looking to make a name for themselves in the NFL. Not to mention the Lions’ offensive line is stacked with pass protectors and run blockers, as head coach Dan Campbell preaches, the game will be won in the trenches.
Number 16 has a lot to prove to everyone this season. Many people say it was all Sean McVay in Los Angeles and Goff did not contribute to anything. Well, believe it or not, Goff did lead the Rams to an NFC Championship and a Super Bowl appearance in 2019.
With the Lions’ new offensive coordinator, Anthony Lynn, and his desire to establish the run and use the ground and pound style of play will pay off for Goff.
Once the run is established then the doors will be opened to incorporate some play action that will leave guys wide open down the field, helping his decision-making and his quest to not throwing as many interceptions this year as he will not have to force throws down the field.
Fans are optimistic that Jared Goff will become a star quarterback in Detroit and start to change the narrative with the new regime.
