Detroit Lions 2021 NFL Draft; And the envelope says…
By Robert Jones
Will Holmes’ open up possibilities?
So what will Brad holmes do?
As I already mentioned, this isn’t nearly as easy to predict as last year with Bob Quinn or how easy it was to pass the ball against Matt Patricia’s defense the last couple of seasons. Because this could go down several ways.
The most obvious is if one of the quarterbacks slide to the Lions at number seven and Holmes is sold on him so they pull the trigger on their passer of the future who can learn behind Goff for a season or two. There would be no reason to throw him to the wolves and destroy his confidence. Sit, learn and play when he’s ready and the team around him is better.
Another move the Lions could make if they stay put at number seven is choosing from at least two of the top receivers in the draft. Players that have big upsides and could help give Detroit’s offense a play-maker for Jared Goff to throw to.
There is also the possibility, remote as it may be, that somehow tackle Penei Sowell is actually on the board when Brad Holmes, Dan Campbell, and the Detroit draft posse get on the clock. This would be another outstanding building block for a young and talented offensive line.
Then of course there is the realistic chance that Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons could be the choice. Despite some off-field issues, Parsons was a wrecking ball at Penn State. He made plays from sideline to sideline and has all the bravado to be the catalyst of a very good defense.
Any one of those possibilities could happen, but then there is the final option; trading back.
There are some very good players at the top of the draft, but one player alone, even a transcendent talent, won’t turn this team around next year.
If the opportunity to trade back and gain additional draft capital is there, then I’m sure Brad Holmes will think long and hard about it. Because the more draft capital the Lions acquire, the more possibilities open up to them.
