Is Trey Lance the Lions’ long-term answer at quarterback?
By Robert Jones
The Detroit Lions‘ new brass voyaged to North Dakota in search of a franchise quarterback. The question is: Did they find one?
This past Friday, Lions’ head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes were in North Dakota. While they weren’t quite braving the sub-arctic weather that North Dakota is known for in the winter, they were particularly interested in what North Dakota States Pro day had to offer.
The Detroit Lions are a team with many holes. Like a slice of swiss cheese, you can look at virtually any position on their roster and find needs. Sure there are some talented players already under contract, but the needs far outweigh any talent right now.
In just a few days when the NFL new year is rung in, Matthew Stafford will officially be a member of the Los Angeles Rams. The media is already taking numbers to barrage him with questions about how happy he is to finally be with a contender that can actually allow him to showcase how good he is.
Simultaneously, Jared Goff will be the Lions’ new top gun. The media is probably lining up to see if his life insurance is paid up and how it will feel to have only a couple of actual threats to work with as opposed to the weapons the Rams had stockpiled around him.
One way or another it seems very remote that anyone other than Goff will be the Lions starting quarterback this fall. Under the circumstances, it is probably for the best to have a veteran sacrificial lamb running the show.
However, the long-term answer to the Lions’ quarterback position has yet to be defined. Brad Holmes was part of the process in Los Angeles that decided to trade up for the first pick in the 2016 NFL draft and select Jared Goff.
Goff who was expected to be the Rams savior did help lead Los Angeles to the Super Bowl only two short years ago. Since then… well, inconsistency caused Rams head coach Sean McVay to sour on Jared.
Now Goff will be the Lions quarterback. But are Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell searching for a better solution to Detroit’s quarterback blues?
