Are the Lions a potential trade partner for Saints’ Malcom Brown?
With a new regime at the helm of the Detroit Lions, everything seems on the table for the Motor City. And with the immediate future of the roster unknown, the former employers of the new staff in Motown could give us a hint as to the direction they might choose to go.
For example, when the Lions were looking to trade quarterback Matthew Stafford, rarely was the projected destination believed to be the Los Angeles Rams. Yet, the fact new general manager Brad Holmes used to be their longtime director of college scouting helped pave the way to that blockbuster trade.
So we know having a previous relationship with another NFL team can open the doors to making such a move. And now with news that the New Orleans Saints are looking to trade their two-time Super Bowl-winning defensive tackle, Malcom Brown, the Lions have to be considered as a possible landing spot.
And that’s due to the Lions’ obvious connections with the Saints. Both head coach Dan Campbell and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn have spent the past five seasons in New Orleans. Campbell was the assistant to head coach Sean Payton as well as the tight ends coach. While Glenn was the Saints defensive backs coach.
As for the player in question, Brown was a first-round selection by the New England Patriots in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Texas. He would spend four seasons with the Pats, winning two Super Bowl rings during that run.
The now 27-year old nose tackle would go on to sign a three-year, $15 million contract to join the Saints in March of 2019. According to a report from NFL.com, the Saints are looking to move Brown, who has one year left on his current deal in New Orleans, due to their poor salary cap situation.

Now the question turns to how this new coaching staff in Detroit feel about their current crop of interior lineman. Another former Pat, Danny Shelton along with Kevin Strong, John Penisini, and Nick Williams all currently occupy the defensive tackle depth chart for the Lions. None of whom would necessarily prevent the Motor City from upgrading the position with a true nose tackle in Malcom Brown.
