Detroit Lions: Coaching and Front Office Power Rankings

Moves that I really like …

4. Anthony Lynn- Offensive Coordinator

For Anthony Lynn personally, maybe this feels like a bit of a step-down. After all, he’s coming off a four-year stint as the Chargers head coach where he compiled a 33-31 record, including a 12-win season in 2018. For the Lions though, they should feel fortunate to have someone who’s moving a step down the career ladder rather than stretching to climb it.

The shoe has been on the other foot several times. Marty Mornhinweg, Rod Marinelli, and Jim Schwartz were all in way over their heads as head coaches for the Lions, but each went on to successful next careers as coordinators, Schwartz even getting a ring with the Eagles as defensive coordinator for their Super Bowl team.

Lynn’s offensive philosophy isn’t heavily innovative or even all that defined (he seems to look at his personnel and decide on the approach from there, probably how it should be in the NFL), but his experience and credibility from being an adequate head coach is what sticks out to me. It’s not often that the Lions have members of the coaching staff who are overqualified for their roles, so the credentials Lynn brings as offensive coordinator is a largely positive sign to me for that reason alone.
