Detroit Lions: 4 free agents that make sense in 2021
By Zach Payne
Curtis Samuel, Will Fuller – Wide Receivers
With the likely departures of both Marvin Jones, Danny Amendola, and Kenny Golladay, the Lions have a severe lack of talent at the wide receiver position. And there are a few different solutions, but the reality is that the Lions could very well be looking at giving Quintez Cephus starting reps next season.
Detroit could find a receiver through via the first round of the upcoming draft, with a couple of top tier options potentially being available for Detroit at the seventh overall pick. But they would probably still need more bodies.
So, who should they free agent target? Well, there are two names that really jump out to me.
One is Curtis Samuel. He is a young, fast, and versatile piece that looks to departing from the Carolina Panthers. Last season, Samuel had 1,051 total yards, 851 receiving, and 200 on the ground along with five total scores.
The 25-year-old could be a very good complimentary piece. However, Samuel could very well struggle if the Lions were to make him WR1 going into the season.
The other option is Will Fuller, the talented but very injury prone deep threat that has spent his career with the Houston Texans thus far. Fuller managed to have his best statistical season this past year, grabbing 53 catches for 879 yards and eight scores in just 11 games. However again the injuries must be noted as Fuller has never played all 16 games in a season.
Will Fuller is great when healthy, however, it seems as if he pops up on the injury report every week. It is a very risky play to go after Fuller given the uncertainty over whether or not he can finish a full season.
