If Jared Goff succeeds with the Detroit Lions, it’s because…

Antwaan Randle El is a magician

I remember watching him play quarterback for the University of Indiana back in the day, so I can attest that Randle El is indeed a magician. The Lions receiving corps is absolutely depleted, but I used to see Randle El do a lot more with a lot less back with the Hoosiers. Kidding aside, for Goff to be successful, the new receivers coach will need to coax this unit into overachieving, because the cupboard at the moment does admittedly look bare.

Or … the Lions draft DeVonta Smith

If you happened to catch the first half of the National Championship game last month, you’re probably salivating at the possibility of the Alabama receiver coming to Detroit. It’s not a pipe dream either, as Todd McShay placed Smith with the Lions at the number seven pick in his most recent mock draft. Getting the Heisman trophy winner in the mix, especially if Kenny Golladay can be convinced to stay, could transform the Lions offense immediately.

Goff comes in with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove

I apologize for the double sports cliche eye-roller in that last sentence, but it’s true. In his statements to the media, Goff seems pissed off about the sour ending to his time with the Rams. If he whines and feels like he unfairly got dealt a bad hand, he probably won’t last long here. If he reacts to the situation constructively and uses it for motivation, this could be the springboard to an expectation-defying second act with the Lions.
