After weeks of speculation and reported interviews, the dominos have started to fall quickly for the Detroit Lions as of late. It kicked off last week with the hiring of the former director of college scouting for the Los Angeles Rams, Brad Holmes, as the Lions’ new general manager.

The dominos continued to fall this week with the expected hiring of New Orleans Saints assistant, Dan Campbell, as the new head coach in Detroit. On Tuesday, it now appears that Campbell is already securing key members of his coaching staff before his hiring is even been made official.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Lions are closing in on a deal that will make Aaron Glenn the new defensive coordinator in Detroit, replacing Cory Undlin. Glenn has been the defensive backs coach for the Saints since 2016. That’s the same year New Orleans brought in Campbell to be their assistant head coach and tight ends coach.

Before taking up coaching as a career, Glenn was an All-Pro cornerback who was elected to three Pro Bowls during a long 15-year NFL career. He was a first-round selection by the New York Jets out of Texas A&M back in 1994. Campbell also happens to be a former Aggie.

Under Glenn’s experienced hand, the Saints passing defense ranked fifth in the NFL allowing an average of just 217.0 yards through the air per game to opposing offenses in 2020. They tied for the league-lead in interceptions with a total of 18.

The 48-year old Aaron Glenn has his work cut out for him in Detroit. Under Undlin last season, the Lions finished the year with the worst defense in the NFL. They ranked dead last in both total yards allowed (419.8) and scoring allowed (32.4) per game in 2020. Their pass defense ranked 30th allowing 284.9 yards per game to opposing offenses, while the run defense ranked 28th (134.9).
