This Detroit Lions’ draft blunder is coming back to haunt them

The Detroit Lions seem to be getting closer to making a decision about who is expected to lead this forlorn franchise to a better tomorrow. Once that new leadership is in place they will have some big decisions to make which will point the direction this team is heading.

This whole past season quickly turned into a ‘wait until next year’ campaign. Not just due to the underachieving on the field, but the countdown by the fans until the firing of general manager Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia.

A firing that proved Thanksgiving Day wishes can come true even if it takes a couple of days. Yet the inevitable decision to move on from Quinn and Patricia started a new countdown. The countdown to a new regime to lead the Detroit Lions.

Whoever Sheila Ford Hamp decides to hire to fill the now vacant positions of general manager and head coach will not be a unanimous hit with the media and fans. If the Lions hire John Schneider as their general manager, then there will be those who will be disappointed it wasn’t Rick Smith, Louis Riddick, or some other candidate.

The same can be said about the Lions’ new head coach. If Robert Saleh is hired then there will be those who will lament the fact it’s not Eric Bieniemy. Not everyone will be happy with the eventual selections, but if the new partnership that Sheila hires turns the Honolulu Blue and Silver into champions, then that would certainly help boost the fan perception.

It would also be a boost that would be well earned because of the situation that this new tandem Sheila hires will walk into. Taking over the Detroit Lions won’t be a cakewalk. Even if this new partnership is dynamic and destined for greatness.

There is much work to be done to rebuild the Lions into winners. Part of which will be having to overcome last year’s draft mistake.
