Just be the ‘same old Lions’ one more time

With all the work there is to do in order to make this long-lost franchise a winner, the Lions’ new regime will need all the help they can get and one last appearance by the ‘same old Lions’ should do the trick.

With the end of the season, the Lions will learn of their final place in the draft order.

The best-case scenario could actually see the Lions picking number three again. However, it seems unlikely that will occur. But if they finish at number five, which is realistic, it would still put them in a good position to start the overhaul needed.

If the new regime decides they like who is available on the board to be their quarterback of the future, like BYU’s Zach Wilson, who seems to be rising up draft boards quickly, Trey Lance of North Dakota State or Florida’s Kyle Trask, then they are in a position to maybe fill that need.

If the new regime isn’t impressed with who is available, then the opportunity to trade back to get extra selections would also make sense for a team that really needs just about everything and only has five picks to work with at the moment.

One way or another, there is more power and possibilities with a higher pick than to see the opportunity wasted with a meaningless win over the Vikings.

If this is indeed Matthew Stafford’s last game as a member of the Detroit Lions, then I’m sure we would all love to see him have a game for the ages to go out on. But considering what’s at stake and how much work this roster needs, there is no room for sentimentality.

Should Matthew come out guns-a-blazing racking up points, but the defense gives up more, then we can live with that. However, if the game comes down to Matthew’s ability to make the big play… well, let’s just say that it is in the Detroit Lions’ best interest for him not to.

Today marks the end of the season and yet another losing era. One more loss would go a long way towards giving the Lions’ new regime an opportunity to create a new future. It may also go a long way towards making this job more interesting to the candidates Sheila is interviewing.

Usually, when we’re hoping the Lions don’t blow an opportunity, we’re just thinking of them finding a way to win a game they should win. Instead, they just need to be the ‘same old Lions’ they have been for the last 60 years one more time in hopes of creating a better opportunity to build a better tomorrow.
