Comparing Sony Michel to Detroit Lions’ Swift

Sony Michel is another University of Georgia runner from their long line of great running backs that stepped into a situation, not unlike the one D’Andre Swift will be entering in 2020. Similar in size and ability to Swift, under 5-11, and 217-pounds, Michel joined the New England Patriots in 2018. The Patriots had a few established options on the roster including Rex Burkhead, James White, and Jeremy Hill.

Michel has very similar speed at 4.54-seconds in his “forty” and is considered to be both shifty and to have a complete set of running back skills. His combine numbers are courtesy of Draft Scout’s website, here.

Most observers rightfully thought that the Patriots were not going to sit a rookie 31st-overall-pick for long.  Michel would rush for 931 yards with 6 touchdowns, despite missing three games and only starting eight of the thirteen he played in.  Swift was only chosen six slots later and all Michel stats are here from Pro Football Reference.

His receiving numbers were practically non-existent due to White and Burkhead being established receivers. Michel only had 7 receptions for 50 yards as a rookie and has been largely taken out on third downs in Foxborough, a fate Swift may be able to avoid since he may have the best hands of any of the backs.

Of course, the Patriots have been in Super Bowl contention throughout the last decade-plus but the Detroit Lions are not lacking in offensive talent to help Swift succeed. The lone question mark is whether or not the offensive line can gel with rookie talent and a new starter at right tackle; Halapoulivaati Vaitai or Tyrell Crosby will get the nod to replace the departed Rick Wagner.
