With the NFL announcing training camp dates, we look ahead and prepare for what Detroit Lions’ fans should be paying attention to.
The Detroit Lions will head into training camp on July 28th, with many newcomers on the team. Along with head coach Matt Patricia heading into a crucial year in his career, here are three things to look for during training camp.
1. The Detroit Lions Trenches
One major factor that will determine the Lions’ success next season will be their offensive and defensive play. The pass rush was the biggest weakness on Detroit’s defense last season.
Look to see who will be replacing Devon Kennard at the EDGE Rusher position. The second-year JACK Linebacker Austin Bryan projects to compete with rookie Julian Okwara. On the interior, defensive tackle Da’Shawn Hand is looking to bounce back after a down a year. Free-agent signing Danny Shelton seems to be in line for a major role as well.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Lions will be returning three starters from last season. The two new additions in rookie Jonah Jackson and free-agent signing Halapoulivaati Vaitai will show the unit’s growth as a whole.
2. Running Backs
Darrell Bevell will have a new running back in town, but let’s not forget about some of the others on the team. Keep an eye on Kerryon Johnson, who now has competition in the backfield. Bo Scarborough and Ty Johnson are both situational backs who figure to help the team.
More importantly, the roles of rookies D’Andre Swift and Jason Huntley are the main attraction. How much action will Swift see? Does Jason Huntley pose a threat to Ty Johnson? Just a few questions to ask yourself.
3. Players on the brink
There are a handful of players to watch out for during training camp. One, in particular, is linebacker Jarrad Davis, who is entering a contract year. Davis hasn’t lived up to expectations and is on his lest leg in Detroit.
With the depth improving after this off-season, defensive back Jamal Agnew will be moving to wide receiver. Which may be a better fit in the long term, however, in the short term might not make as much sense.
Last of all, quarterback Matthew Stafford is heading into a season in which if the team fails to win, it might transition into a rebuilding period. With “new” ownership, the Lions could take a new approach entirely in that scenario.
