The Detroit Lions have had a strong free agency so far this offseason. The signing of wide receiver Geronimo Allison only helps to support that narrative.

The Detroit Lions already have one of the better wide receiver corps in the league with Marvin Jones, Kenny Golladay, and veteran Danny Amendola. They may have found a fourth WR in former Green Bay Packer Geronimo Allison.

Allison is signed to a one-year deal worth $910K with a $137.5K bonus as reported by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport. That’s a neat bargain for the Lions right there.

It may not be the flashiest signing, but definitely could prove to be a good one. Allison is only 26 years old, so there’s obviously a lot of room for him to grow, potentially with Detroit if he has a good season in 2020.

Standing at 6-foot-3, Allison is only one inch shorter than Kenny G, meaning he could be a possible red zone threat as well.

Running a 4.67 40-yard dash out of Illinois in 2016, many scouts knocked Allison for his lack of speed. But the man is deceptively fast in the open field.

His route running is better than most, which allows him to create separation against man coverage, and find the soft spots in zone coverage easily. His double-move is one of the ways he gets himself open.

Allison is coming off of a season where he caught the ball 34 times for 287 yards and two touchdowns. Don’t be fooled by the stats though. He became more of a target for quarterback Aaron Rodgers down the stretched as he was targeted 55 times last season.

Part of that was due to injury from other Packer wide receivers, but Allison still was able to prove himself as a serviceable target for the future Hall of Fame QB. He very well could be that same security blanket for Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.

With Marvin Jones only playing 22 games in the past two seasons due to injury, Allison could find himself being more of a target next season in Detroit. Not to mention that Danny Amendola is 34-years old, so he could start to have injury problems as well.

Like I said before, it’s not the flashiest signing for the Detroit Lions, but an underrated one for sure.  I think once the 2020 season gets underway, this will be an addition that the Lions front office will be glad to have made.
