The decision whether or not to move on from offensive lineman Graham Glasgow would appear to be the Lions’ biggest when it comes to their own free agents. Yet, by the Lions not already working out an extension for their versatile guard/center, it appears Detroit has every intention of allowing Glasgow to test the free-agent market.

This is a puzzling move for a front office that has invested so much into their offensive line over the past four seasons, including two first-round selections. Yet the team’s radio silence about Glasgow indicates they don’t seem to value an interior offensive guard at the amount the impending unrestricted free agent is likely to fetch on the open market.

If that’s true, perhaps the Lions’ brass believes that they can get near-equal production from Joe Dahl, whom the team did sign to a two-year extension last season. Dahl started 13 games for Detroit in 2019.

Detroit also could opt to re-sign veteran guard Kenny Wiggins, who has started 13 games over the past two seasons. The 31-year old Wiggins will be an unrestricted free agent next month according to spotrac.com. He could certainly be a nice stop-gap if needed.

Guard Oday Aboushi, who is set to become a free agent in March as well, started two games for Detroit this past season. And the Lions also have a promising undrafted free agent rookie from last year in Beau Benzschawel who may be able to step up his development to compete for a more meaningful role in 2020.

Still, it seems very odd that the Detroit Lions would choose to actually make their offensive line worse by losing someone as versatile and talented as Graham Glasgow. Especially in the wake of their starting quarterback, 32-year old Matthew Stafford, missing eight games last season due to a back injury.
