Detroit Lions: Re-signing Danny Amendola maintains offensive chemistry
The Detroit Lions opted to re-sign Danny Amendola on Saturday, securing their wide receiver corps and offensive chemistry for 2020.
When the Detroit Lions inked wide receiver Danny Amendola to a one-year, $4.5 million contract last March, he figured to be just the latest in a long line of former New England Patriots coming to the Motor City to change the culture. But after his solid performance in 2019, Detroit has now apparently decided to re-sign the 34-year old slot receiver for another season.
On Saturday, Amendola’s agent Erik Burkhardt announced that his client is re-signing with the Lions for another season via Twitter. The exact financials of the deal are currently unknown. But you’d expect the numbers to be similar to or higher than what he received last year.
During his first season in Detroit, Amendola recorded 62 receptions for 678 yards and a single touchdown. He averaged 10.9 yards per catch, the second-highest average of his 11-year career.
Despite last season being his first with the Lions, Amendola built a strong chemistry with quarterback Matthew Stafford. The veteran slot receiver was targeted 97 times in 2019, the second-highest on the team only behind Pro Bowl receiver Kenny Golladay‘s 116 targets.
By re-signing Amendola, who was slated to become an unrestricted free agent next month, the Lions secure their wide receiver corps for 2020. The trio of Golladay, Amendola, and Marvin Jones Jr. comprises one of the strongest positional units on the team … and perhaps in the NFL.
With offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell at the helm of the offense last season, the Lions posted the 10th best passing offense averaging 243.8 yards per game. And that’s despite Stafford playing in only eight games due to a back injury. Re-signing Amendola helps the team keep their offensive chemistry.
Now that Darrell Bevell is entering his second season in the Motor City, and with Matthew Stafford on the mend, the Detroit Lions are certainly hoping that by keeping this passing attack intact it will mean an even better offensive performance in 2020.
