How far away is this Detroit Lions roster from being Super?
By Paul Cassar
Linebackers
KC – Anthony Hitchens, Damien Wilson and Ben Niemann worked together for 225 tackles and 3.5 sacks.
SF – Kwon Alexander, Fred Warner, and Dre Greenlaw combined for 224 tackles, 5.0 sacks and two interceptions.
DET – Jarrad Davis, Devon Kennard, Jahlani Tavai, and Christian Jones totaled 230 tackles, 13.0 sacks, and one interception.
Conclusion – If Davis or Tavai can ever develop into a feared force in the middle, this position group could be solid for the Lions moving forward. Until that happens, Detroit may need some help here too.
Defensive Backs
KC – Charvarius Ward, Bashaud Breeland, Kendall Fuller, Daniel Sorensen, and Tyrann Mathieu amassed 303 tackles, 3.0 sacks, and 10 interceptions. Pass defense rank, 6th.
SF – Emmanuel Moseley, Richard Sherman, K’Waun Williams, Jaquiski Tartt, and Jimmie Ward combined for 257 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and six interceptions. Pass defense rank, 2nd.
DET – Darius Slay, Rashaan Melvin, Justin Coleman, Tavon Wilson, and Tracy Walker accounted for 369 tackles, 1.0 sack, and four interceptions. Pass defense rank, 29th.
Conclusion – The amount of tackles for Detroit’s secondary isn’t necessarily a good thing. A defensive line that actually puts pressure on the quarterback would help this group. The Lions desperately need to add a cornerback to start opposite of Slay.
In summary, the Detroit Lions roster isn’t remotely close to the two teams that we will watch on Sunday in Super Bowl LIV. I’m not sure if Motown will get a championship parade that it deserves any time soon.
