Detroit Lions: 4 free agent linebackers to consider signing

After a 3-12-1 season, the Detroit Lions have a lengthy shopping list. Here are four free agents that could help the second level of their defense.

Even though NFL free agency is still nine weeks away, rest assured that the Detroit Lions‘ personnel department has already jumped right into their long list of player evaluations and offseason targets. A brutal season and a “win-now-or-else” mandate from ownership will have that effect.

Detroit has a number of holes to fill on their roster, particularly on the defensive side. Prior to last season, many pegged their defense to be a strong and versatile unit.

However, the Lions wound up ranking near the bottom of the league in several key defensive categories. Hence, they need an injection of talent and playmaking to help the entire unit reach its potential.

One area of significant concern is their linebacking corps. It’s a group to which they have dedicated much capital in recent seasons, including high draft picks (Jarrad Davis and Jahlani Tavai) and healthy free agent contracts (Devon Kennard and Christian Jones). Still, none of these players have been able to help lift the unit into the upper echelon of the NFC.

So what can they do to fix it, especially in a draft year when linebacker is not a position of considerable depth? Here are four soon-to-be free agents who could help the unit take a big step forward in 2020 …
