Detroit Lions: What would a complete rebuild look like?
Step 3: Who’s out the door?
Here are the players who would likely get traded as part of a rebuild. Veterans who might prefer to pursue a role on contending teams.
Offense: Quarterback Matthew Stafford, wide receiver Marvin Jones
Defense: Defensive tackle Damon Harrison, cornerback Darius Slay
These are the four players who are under contract and have high trade value. They all would most likely be traded for draft picks and/or young talent.
Who gets cut? I have two players who candidates to get released from the team. Those two are offensive tackle Rick Wagner and linebacker Devon Kennard. It would save the Lions around 12 million in cap space if they were to move on from them.
Lastly, wide receiver Danny Amendola, tight end Logan Thomas, defensive tackle Mike Daniels, cornerback Rashaan Melvin, and safety Tavon Wilson would probably leave Detroit during free agency. Anyone else I haven’t mentioned is either fighting for roster spots or testing free agency.
Overview
As a Lions fan, I would be against this particular route. I think the team should keep building on what they have. On the other hand, it was intriguing to visit this idea. Ultimately, I believe this would be the blueprint for a full-blown rebuild. All while letting go of this regime and bringing in a new general manager and head coach.
