Kris Richard, Defensive Backs Coach – Cowboys

If the Lions want to hire a defensive-minded head coach, the choice could be Kris Richard. Although Richard has the title of Passing Game Coordinator and Defensive Backs coach for the Dallas Cowboys, his role is more of a defacto co-defensive coordinator alongside former Lions’ head coach Rod Marinelli in Dallas.

Richard was in charge of the Seattle Seahawks defense when it was known as the Legion of Boom. And he’s brought that same energized mentality to the Cowboys’ defense. It was Richard who moved underwhelming safety Byron Jones to cornerback last season, making him a Pro Bowler.

A former player himself, Richard is known as a player’s coach. And his intensity during practices and on gameday is infectious. The 40-year old coordinator always seems to be one step away from strapping on a helmet himself and stepping out on the field. It’s an energy that is desperately needed in the Motor City.

Richard was a hot head coaching name last year but chose to stay in Dallas. He’ll likely be a top candidate for the Cowboys’ head coaching job if the team decides to move on from long-time head coach Jason Garrett. If not, Richard should certainly be on the Lions’ radar.
