Melvin Gordon, Los Angeles Chargers

After a long holdout, a seemingly reluctant return without a new deal, and a poor start to the regular season, not much has gone right for running back Melvin Gordon in Los Angeles.

Scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason, the two-time Pro Bowler wants a long-term deal. One the Chargers seem reluctant to offer. Fellow Chargers running back Austin Ekeler has proven to be far more effective this season, making a parting of the ways sensible for both sides.

Gordon wants a forever home and to protect himself financially. Why shouldn’t the Lions be the ones to give that to him? A first-round selection in the 2015 NFL Draft, Gordon has racked up nearly 3,700 rushing yards in his first four seasons with the Chargers. He’s recorded a total of 38 touchdowns over the previous three seasons alone.

The 26-year old’s best season came in 2017 when Gordon was a 16-game starter, rushed for 1,105 yards, caught 58 receptions for another 476 yards, and scored 12 total touchdowns. He was elected to the Pro Bowl in both 2016 and 2018 after scoring double-digit rushing touchdowns in both of those seasons.
