Detroit Lions: Surviving is good, but finishing is better
By Robert Jones
Keys to Surviving
One of the keys to surviving is for a team to learn how to win when they aren’t playing their best. So far this season the Lions have not played close to their potential, but have been able to win two games and hold on for an embarrassing tie instead of allowing it to become an embarrassing loss.
The Lions offense has yet to find their groove and build the type of synchronicity needed to be truly prolific. But in spurts, they have been dynamic. In time, we should expect the Darrell Bevell plan to work.
They have improved each week slowly and steadily. Even the play of the offensive line that was such a concern after the opener in Arizona has made strides.
Meanwhile, the defensive line has been a disappointment. However, outside of the fourth quarter against the Cardinals, they have bent, but not broken. Despite allowing quite a bit of yardage against the Chargers and Eagles, they have limited the points they have given up.
Lions fans should be very encouraged by what they have seen so far. It may not be completely what we’re hoping for, but it is a positive start that is going in the right direction and despite that tie in the opener, they are technically still unbeaten. Even though league insiders prefer not to list the Lions among the undefeated.
Yet progress is progress and if we pay close attention to what Matt Patricia has built in his second season so far, this is a team that has survived early scares that have threatened to collapse this season much like last year.
The difference so far? More players that have bought-in to Patricia’s system, a higher talent level, more overall experience running his defense and a new diverse offense that has more capabilities. The fact that it isn’t firing all cylinders yet is just a testament to their ability to survive when they aren’t at their best. But there is one big step they need to take.
