2 players to watch for the Lions

Ty Johnson – Veteran running back C.J. Anderson’s surprising release earlier this week confirmed Johnson’s place as the number two option in the backfield behind Kerryon Johnson.

The former Johnson has excellent speed and shiftiness, and he will be relied upon to spell the starting Johnson occasionally against the Eagles’ stout run defense. He should get his share of looks as well in the return game due to Agnew’s struggles.

Jahlani Tavai – With the possible return of starting middle linebacker Jarrad Davis from injury this week, Tavai’s snaps figure to diminish against the Eagles. However, should Tavai continue to flash his playmaking ability, such as he did against the Chargers in forcing a goal-line fumble.

It will be hard for the Lions to keep him off the field in critical situations. It will be fascinating to watch what kind of impact he and Davis can have on the field together, and we could see that as soon as today.

2 players to watch for the Eagles

J.J. Arcega-Whiteside – Without DeSean Jackson and possibly Alshon Jeffrey, the rookie receiver should see plenty of action in Week 3. That was a necessity in Philadelphia’s loss last week to the Atlanta Falcons when multiple Eagles pass catchers were forced to leave the game. Arcega-Whiteside responded with just one reception for four yards; should he receive the bulk of the targets today, that kind of production could sink the Eagles’ offense.

Ronald DarbyPhiladelphia’s cornerback group has plenty of experience but hasn’t played well to start the year. Darby, in particular, has really struggled, as he continues to work his way back from a torn ACL suffered last year. Is he up to defending Kenny Golladay for an entire game? Whether he is or not, expect the Lions to challenge him early and often today.
