Rational Thoughts

I’ll catch my breath now and give a few non-meltdown related observations from Sunday…

Pass Interference No Calls-From both teams, I saw a ton of defensive backs grabbing jerseys and making contact during passing plays, with no flags thrown the majority of the time. Is ‘light pass interference’ going to be a thing that’s okay this year, or were these particular refs just letting them play?

Larry FitzgeraldFor him to be in year 16 of his NFL career and still be making the plays he made , can’t do anything but tip my hat to Fitzgerald. Easy to see why this guy is universally respected around the league.

Offensive Weapons- The old Stafford was back, T.J. Hockenson was even better than advertised, Amendola was far better than advertised too, Marvin Jones and Kenny Golladay took turns with some big catches. Johnson and Anderson were held in check in the backfield, but still churned out some decent yardage between them. There are plenty of weapons on this offense, so let’s use them!

Other teams lose leads too. The Chargers were up 15 points and went to overtime. The Jets blew a 16 point lead and lost. The Redskins let a 17 point lead slip away. Detroit’s 18 point hiccup was the biggest of the day and ties for the largest blown 4th quarter league in franchise history (so two ties for the price of one), but they were hardly the only team to get a little too comfortable on Sunday.

I actually think the Lions will win next week- The Los Angeles Chargers of San Diego gave up a 24-9 lead of their own to go to overtime against a sub-standard team, and their starting running back is refusing to play. Even though backup Austin Ekeler had the game of his life and the Chargers pulled out a win, they’re vulnerable. An embarrassed Lions team and an angrier than normal Ford Field crowd will be looking to let out some frustration.
