Duke Dawson, CB – New England Patriots

The battle for the second starting cornerback spot opposite Darius Slay on the outside ended in a whimper. It appears free agent signing Rashaan Melvin has won the job by default as everyone else failed to step up to earn the job. But Melvin is coming off a down season with the Oakland Raiders and is far from a permanent solution as the 29-year old only signed a one-year deal in Detroit.

With former second-rounder Teez Tabor a candidate to be released in the coming days and rookie Amani Oruwariye still needing time to develop, the Lions could look to a familiar place to find a cornerback to play a significant role this season.

The Lions might find their answer in Duke Dawson, the Patriots’ second-round selection from just last year. After missing his entire rookie season with a hamstring injury in 2018, Dawson is now rumored to be on the bubble in New England.

The 56th overall selection out of Florida seems to be a bad fit with the Patriots, and the Lions might benefit from that. Although Dawson is projected to be a better slot corner, Detroit may be forced to move Justin Coleman, their high-priced free-agent signing this offseason, to the outside anyway if Melvin falters. Dawson could benefit from a change in environment and the Lions would land themselves a young defender to groom for the future.
